Being sociable with your neighbours is a wonderful way to develop strong and friendly relationships while deepening your bonds. If you live away from your family, your neighbors become like a second family.

Now I'll tell you about Vriddhi, an interesting neighbour and my best buddy.

I live alone in a society in a different city, away from my parents. I have many neighbours in the society, but the one who lives just below my flat is the one whom I am close with the most. I've known her since the lockdown. We couldn't return home because, due to the lockdown, we weren’t allowed to commute to different cities. Therefore, we became closer as we watched out for each other during difficult times.

She is a true gem who is always willing to help anyone in need. My area has had a few emergencies, and she has always come to the rescue. Vriddhi takes a cool, composed approach. With a warm demeanour and motherly disposition, she is an interesting neighbour one could have.

I see her practically every day when we go for a walk together after dinner. We also usually have dinner together.

Honestly, I share a sisterly affinity with her. We cook for one another and look after each other when we are unwell. Since she is three years older than me, I keep discussing my life situation with her to seek her guidance, which makes our conversation more interesting. I am really grateful to have her in my life.

Our neighbours can be our support system and chosen families, and I feel blessed to have such a good and interesting neighbour.

Neighbours are the people who live with us in both good and terrible times. I live in a one-story building whose owners live next door. They are part of a Hindu family with rich traditions and customs.

I have lived here for more than five years now. I approached them in search of a house and have been amazed by their kind gestures since then.

This neighbour has a family of two, and they are an old age couple. Mr Sharma is a pretty calm and helpful individual. He has abundant knowledge of our history, culture, natural cures for illness, and other topics that the younger generation isn’t aware of.

As a student, I am mostly busy with my studies. However, I do encounter him on weekends. Sometimes, we also gather for morning walks and discuss various issues as a form of knowledge exchange. I frequently solicit their recommendations regarding future plans, discuss modern problems of youngsters, take certain life lessons, etc.

He treats me like a member of their family and includes me in every special occasion they celebrate. The best thing is that they preserve our traditions in our fast-paced environment and pass them on to future generations. Their life experiences, compassion for nature, and expertise greatly impacted me, and I find all these perspectives to be quite interesting.

Respect for one another, regardless of culture or custom, is a characteristic of a good neighbour. Before expecting help from your neighbours, you should start helping yourself first in order to become a good neighbour.

Question: What are some qualities of a good community?

Answer: A community in which individuals work together to address problems or issues is seen as a good community. People should take ownership of their communities and keep them neat and clean. Everyone should bear equal responsibility for the property and its amenities. They should respect each other and treat everyone equally. Moreover, small events/meetings must be held to foster greater association.

Question: Do you think (good) neighbours are important? (Why?How?Why not?)

Answer: Yes, in my opinion, good neighbours are crucial because they serve as an extension of our own family. When we are alone and in need of company, the first people we think of are our neighbours. When we are sick and need to go to the hospital, our neighbours are the first people to help. When we have guests and need a helping hand, neighbours are the first to come to our rescue.

Question: In India, are there any facilities to improve relations between neighbours?

Answer: Yes, several government authorities focus on improving relations between neighbours. Government authorities like PUDA, or Punjab Urban Development Authority, have regularly created well-maintained parks for people to socialise. Not only Punjab but almost all states have provided such services. Even private housing societies that build and sell units have some shared facilities that all members of the group can utilise.

Question: What are the qualities or main attributes of a good neighbour?

Answer: A good neighbour is always thoughtful and helpful. They help us in difficult situations and collaborate with us in the community or society in which we live. An ideal neighbour is always available to help us anytime we need it, and if there is an emergency at home, good neighbours will assist us in any way they can.

Question: What kind of neighbours you don’t like?

Answer: I dislike those who have horrible manners. Neighbours must respect our privacy and not intrude on our personal lives. Also, people who constantly argue over little matters are intolerable.

Question: Do most Indian people know their neighbours?

Answer: In India, people value cooperation and healthy connections. Even now, many people live in blended families. In rural and semi-urban settings, most neighbours know one another and converse on a daily basis. To keep this age alive, especially in metropolitan areas, individuals organise society meetings/functions to get together and socialise.

Question: How do you stay connected with your neighbours?

Answer: Due to job schedules, we are unable to meet our neighbours face to face on a regular basis. However, I often communicate and stay connected with them using WhatsApp. We formed an online group to keep connected and discuss a variety of issues that we face regarding the safety of our colony. We can schedule meetings, plan outings, and send greetings on special events such as birthdays and festivals via SMS and phone calls. Aside from that, if any suspicious actions occur in the area, I will convey my concerns and inform them about them. Moreover, during festivals, we often visit each other's houses and celebrate together.
