Describe a picture/photograph of you that you like: IELTS cue card

A picture or photograph is the recollection of a memory captured for a long time. It is a medium for reminiscing about a time when one was immensely happy or a time worth remembering. I wish to tell you about a picture of mine that is close to my heart. 

The picture I am talking about was taken on my 5th birthday. 

It was taken at my home during my birthday celebration. 

A family friend took the picture. 

I felt great about the picture because it brings back a lot of memories that will be cherished for life. It was on my 5th birthday that my parents decided to celebrate with a grand party. The photograph particularly has a Mickey-shaped cake in it, and I remember that it was one delicious cake to this day. The picture shows my mother and I dressed as best as we could. 

To conclude, this picture does a wonderful job of capturing the emotional connection that occurs between a mother and her child.  As a result, I now see the value of preserving the pleasant childhood memories of my upbringing. 

Photographs are gateways to memories. With the help of pictures, one can easily recollect their favourite memory of a trip, get-together, scenery, a person, and much more. Today, I want to discuss a similar memory that is very dear to me and always brings good feelings whenever I look at it. 

It was taken when we went to visit the Jim Corbett National Park.

The picture was taken when we went on a jungle safari and had to stop in between for some snacks and hot beverages as it was cold out there. 

I remember my mother taking a picture of my sister and me. 

I have a bittersweet feeling about the picture; this is because I am approaching a chital (a kind of deer) resting near a food joint. People could approach them and feed them biscuits and other food items. As a kid, I was really afraid to touch it because I had an irrational fear that it might hurt me, and looking at that picture brings back all those memories.

To conclude, even though I have a bittersweet memory of this particular picture, it was still an enjoyable trip, and the photograph brought back all those memories. 

Photographs are captured to preserve memories, but not all pictures need to depict good memories. One thing is certain about a photograph: it brings out emotions related to a particular time when it was taken. With this cue card topic, I want to share about a picture that I like, and that brings back a few special memories. 

The picture I am talking about is from before I was born, showing scenery taken during winter. 

The picture was taken in the beautiful valley of Kashmir. 

My brother took the photograph during one of his trips to the mountains to capture its true beauty.

The photograph was the epitome of peace and serenity. It showcased the untravelled and hidden gems of the Indian subcontinent and how beautiful nature can be. This particular photo made me proud of India's exceptional landscapes.

To conclude, sometimes even a picture of Mother Earth can bring an unexplainable sense of calmness.

Question- Has the way people take photos changed?

Answer-  The way people take pictures has evolved with the changing times and technology. Techniques for taking photos have evolved over time, as people initially used Polaroid cameras, which are now considered antiques. Now, DSLR pictures and selfies or pictures on phones have become popular. 

Question- Why do some people like to keep photos?

Answer- Human beings have a habit of getting attached to memories and like to capture them in the form of a photograph. This is one of the main reasons why people like to click more pictures and document their lives for their memories. Simultaneously, some people have a hard time letting go of their memories due to their emotional attachment, making letting go of a specific picture even more difficult. 

Question- Why do some people like to delete photos?

Answer- Some people think that clearing their minds of the past and emotionally severing their ties to it will enable them to move forward in life. There are instances where some people take pictures of documents or papers that they feel need to be deleted, or photographs that hold memories that they want to forget come in bundles that people feel the need to delete.

Question- Do you think that photos are important?

Answer- Photographs are obviously significant. Since pictures enable individuals to remember important occasions, people, locations, feelings, and past tales, I believe everyone needs photos. Photographs serve as living proof of all the joyful times experienced by individuals, helping people to go down memory lane. 

Question- Do you think photographs help preserve memories better than other forms of media?

Answer- Absolutely. Pictures have a special power to seize momentary moments and bring back cherished memories. They act as concrete mementoes of significant occasions and encounters in our lives. Although photos are important, other types of media, such as written journals or movies, may equally successfully preserve memories and provide new perspectives on the past.

Question- Would you say that the quality of a photograph matters more than the memories it captures?

Answer- A quality image can improve its aesthetic appeal, but in the end, what really makes a snapshot significant are the memories and feelings it evokes. Even a hazy or flawed picture might be extremely nostalgic if it shows a special occasion.

To conclude, cue card topics like “Describe a picture/photograph of you that you like" are easy to discuss, but the key to responding to such topics is to be precise with your answers. Sometimes, with these kinds of topics, one can easily sway with their answers and not be able to complete all the answers in time. Therefore, it is advised to use the one minute given for preparation with precision and appropriateness. In totality, be mindful of the time given to you and use that time wisely to score a good band score in the speaking section.
