The 11–14-minute IELTS speaking portion has three sections. During the first section, which is the introduction section, the examiner tries to establish a connection with the pupils by asking some simple questions. The examiner then gives the student a minute to prepare for the cue card topic. The third and last component is the "follow-up questions" section, in which the examiner poses some questions about the subjects covered or mentioned in the Speaking test's cue card section.

Describe a person you met at a party and enjoyed a conversation with: cue card sample answer 1

Introduction

There are different kinds of people in the world. Some like socialising, whereas others like socialising less and are comfortable with a limited number of people in their surroundings. Likewise, I want to share an experience where I enjoyed conversing with a person at a party.

What was the party about?

The party was for my friend’s birthday. He has various groups, and he organised a birthday party to which all the groups were invited.

Who was the person?

The person was one of my friend’s friends from another group. He was his friend from his coaching days.

What did you talk about?

We bonded over common topics like the course we were pursuing and what we wanted to do next in our lives. We also talked about the property where the party was being held and many other random topics that we thought were interesting at the moment.

Explain why you enjoyed talking with him/her.

I enjoyed talking to him because the conversations were easy-going, and I did not have to make an effort for that conversation. The party's ambience was also quite comforting and full of warmth, which led to this easy-flowing conversation.

How did you feel?

I felt good about the conversation I had with him. It was a nice way to make new friends and get to know new people. He is still my friend, and we talk once in a while.

Conclusion

To conclude, that birthday party turned out to be nice for me as I made a new friend and found a person with whom I had good conversations.

Describe a person you met at a party and enjoyed a conversation with: cue card sample answer 2

Introduction

Parties can be a good way of meeting new people and socialising. There are different kinds of parties. One kind is where we mostly know everyone, like at family gatherings and social functions. The other type is where we go with our friends or make an effort to meet new people. This is exactly what I would like to share with you today: how I met a person at a party and enjoyed conversations with them.

What was the party about?

It was a New Year’s party, and all the people present at the party were from different places and getting to know one another.

Who was the person?

The person I met at that party was a dentist, and we started our conversation with food, which was a common topic.

What did you talk about?

We mostly talked about each other and what we did, along with what motivated us to go to that party, how we liked the party, the music and many other such topics.

Explain why you enjoyed talking with him/her.

I enjoyed talking to her because I learned about something I was unaware of and a whole new genre. Additionally, we had many things in common, which made the conversation fun and free-flowing.

How did you feel?

I feel good about having met her because she made me more aware of something I did not know, and I like talking about things that I am unaware of. It widens my horizons. What actually took me by surprise was that she was 4-5 years older than me, but I was comfortable talking to her, and never in the entire conversation did we feel that there was an age gap that needed to be bridged.

Describe a person you met at a party and enjoyed a conversation with: cue card sample answer 3

Introduction

Parties can prove to be good conversation starters, although one needs to be careful while talking to new people as we do not know with what intention the other person has come. Keeping that thought aside, I would like to share an experience where I met someone at a party and enjoyed a conversation with him.

What was the party about?

It was a Diwali party, and one of my friends and I went to a party with strangers.

Who was the person?

The person I met was a practising lawyer.

What did you talk about?

Being from the same background as him, we had several topics to talk about. We had a conversation about how much he likes litigation and practising in front of the various courts, various work opportunities, where both of us started our careers, and why we chose that particular field, which continued to other topics as well.

Explain why you enjoyed talking with him/her.

I enjoyed talking to him because we could discuss a field and work of law in great detail, which is difficult for other people to understand. Moreover, having conversations with people from the same field is always easier.

How did you feel?

I felt good after talking to him and understanding the things that I was not exposed to in relation to the legal fraternity. With his vote of confidence and understanding, I got to know more about the field, which motivated me to work towards it.

Conclusion

To conclude, I would say that the Diwali party was successful for me because I met a new person, had good conversations with him and got to know something that I was not aware of.

IELTS Speaking Part 3- Follow-up questions

Question- Under what circumstances does people meet new people, and when do they communicate with people they don’t know?

Answer- Usually, social activities like parties, get-togethers, or networking gatherings are where you meet new individuals. Furthermore, you could meet new people when travelling, taking lessons, or engaging in group activities. In daily situations such as shopping, public transportation, or line waiting, you are likely to communicate with people you do not know.

Question- How do people start a conversation?

Answer- Asking open-ended questions that entice the other person to share their ideas or experiences is another effective way to start a discussion. Furthermore, making an introduction and extending a kind welcome is a simple method to break the ice and indicate a willingness to communicate. A lighthearted comment or use of humour can facilitate a discussion in a casual setting.

Question- Where would people get to know new people?

Answer- People frequently meet new people in social situations like pubs, cafés, or restaurants where they congregate with friends or attend events. Workplaces and educational institutions can offer opportunities to make new friends through encounters with coworkers, classmates, or fellow students. Spoken word events, cultural festivals, and interest organisations are other venues for people to connect with like-minded people. Dating apps, social networking sites, and online forums are becoming increasingly common ways to meet new people and widen one's social network.

Answer- Social anxiety or shyness can prevent some people from wanting to talk to others, which makes them uncomfortable in social settings. Some people might treasure their privacy and would rather be left alone; they could want to avoid short chats or shallow conversations.
