Why Medics Do Not Need to Take TOEFL and IELTS for the UK Job

Anymore

From 1st October onwards, Medical personnel planning to practice in the UK need not sit for TOEFL and IELTS anymore. Their scores in the Occupational English Test (OET) will decide their English language skills. The streamlining of English language skill exams is to ensure the medical professionals fill the vacant but vital posts in the medical facilities in the UK at the earliest.

Medics from the following fields have to sit only for the OET test for their Tier2 (General) visa applications:

  • medicine
  • dentistry
  • dietetics
  • optometry
  • radiography
  • occupational therapy
  • nursing
  • pharmacy
  • podiatry
  • physiotherapy
  • speech pathology

Veterinary Science

The design of OET caters to medical professionals. The exam gets accepted internationally for the evaluation of their English language communication skills. Healthcare professionals aspiring license to practice their profession in the UK have had to sit for this test before as well. They did it to register with the General Medical Council and the Nursing and Midwifery Council, the two UK healthcare boards. Additionally, they sat for the TOEFL or the IELTS exams. Now, the TOEFL and the IELTS are no longer mandatory.

IELTS is the ‘International English Language Testing System’. It assesses the language expertise of people planning to use English for communication. The examiners have a nine-band scale to distinguish the levels of proficiency, starting with non-user (band score 1) to expert (band score 9). Unlike OET, IELTS is not a particular profession-centric. From students to professionals from all spheres to aspiring migrates-all can sit for its tests. For students, it conducts one type of test, for professionals another, and for the aspiring migrates the third type.

IELTS offices are at 1,600 centers worldwide. IELTS schedules 48 test dates per year.

Centers such as IELTS Lucknow and IELTS Jaipur have common registration address.
