The University of Auckland, New Zealand, a leading institution, began its journey in 1883 as Auckland University College, an arm of the University of New Zealand. It was started in a disused courthouse and jail premises with 95 students and 4 teaching staff. By 1901 number of students rose to 156, out of which most of the students were enrolled part-time and were training towards being law clerks and teachers. In 1905 the University of Auckland started taking enrollments for Commerce studies also. Slowly and steadily, the roll increased, and today, the University of Auckland is the largest in New Zealand, hosting over 40,000 students. For several years, the University of Auckland has consistently placed among the top 100 universities in the QS World University Rankings. Initially, the University of Auckland was established as a constituent college of the University of New Zealand as Auckland University College. Still, in 1961 the University of New Zealand was dissolved, and the University of Auckland was empowered by the University of Auckland Act 1961.
