“Pathway Programs” in Australia

Pathway programs are for those students who are not able to meet the direct entry requirements of the Australian Universities. These programs are both for the undergraduate level and postgraduate level. These programs are also called as ‘Packaged Programs’. The students who miss the mark to the direct entry requirements of the Australian Universities.

Academic Pathway Programs (Undergraduate)

These is for the students scoring 60% to 64% in HSC. They are also called diploma leading to degree programs. Students get admission usually in a college where they study diploma program for one year. After they complete their diploma, the students get the admission in the second year of Bachelor’s Degree, eventually completing their bachelor’s degree in 3 year itself.


Least acceptable academic scores for the students of state boards is 60% and for the students from CBSE/ICSE board is 60%. Cases of borderline with 58% – 59% can be considered on a case-by-case basis.


  • IELTS score                    : Overall 6.0 with no bands less than 5.0
  • PTE score                       : Overall 50 with no sub score less than 50.


This program is offered to the students who miss the marks to meet the NOOSR criteria. A short duration of program is offered to the students for qualifying, i.e. up to 3-4 months called as Postgraduate Qualifying Program (PQP) or Pre-Master’s Program (PMP). Any student enrolled in such a program will first have to complete the PQP successfully after he can start pursuing his master’s degree. PQPs are obtainable only for business/management/accounting degrees.


English Language Pathway are also called as ELICOS, EAP, ELP, etc. Before commencing their main program students have to study English for a certain period of time. Duration of ELICOS varies from 10 weeks to 20 weeks. Tuition fees of ELICOS is AUD 300 to AUD 400 per week. Longer duration of ELICOS (more than 15 weeks) may result in visa refusal of students.


For the shortfall of 0.5 bands in IELTS the students have to undergo 10 weeks.

GTE Assessment is conducted at three levels:

scores, IELTS score and work experience) of the student. Secondly, the reason

behind choosing to study his intended program. Then, how much the program choosen by the student is related to his previous education and if it is beneficial for the student or not. Following, if the student is aware of the program structure, costs, units, etc. Then, the evidence he can furnish to explain the reasons and the gaps in the profile of the students. Then, reason why student not studying in India and also reason for choosing studying in australia and not other countries. Following, the students’s reason for choosing his desired university in comparison with other universities in Australia. Subsequently, the student’s future plans, organizations he desire to work with, designations he expects to work at, and salary he expects to receive after his studies are over.

Then, if the applicant have marital status then firstly the qualification of the spouse, employment status of spouse, annual income of spouse and the tenure of marriage is needed to be mentioned. Following, the history of visa refusal and immigration of the student and the dependents for australia and other countries. Then, awareness of the applicant about the costs (tutition fees and living expenses) during his stay in Australia and how he plans to cover the expenses. Next, circumstances he is facing in India, and also employment status and annual income of his sponsers. Lastly, the circumstances of the student as in presence of his close family members in Australia.


This term is for the students who after completing their studies wants to live, study and work in Australia temporarily.

Suitability measures to apply for the visa are mentioned below:

  • Age less than 50 years.
  • Minimum of 92 weeks (2years) study in duration.
  • English language criteria (Overall 6 with no bands less than 5).
  • Eligible visa of applicant.
  • In last six months the applicant must meet the Australian study requirements.
  • Health insurance of the applicant in Australia.

Temporary Graduate Visa have two streams, firstly, Graduate work stream and secondly, Post study work stream. The graduate work stream is duration of 18 months and granted to the applicants who graduate with skills and qualification that mentioned on the Skilled Occupation List. The duration of Post study work stream is usually 2 years but in case it can extended to 4 years depending on the qualification. Study field is not a measure for this stream.
