What is the Full Form of TOEFL?

TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language. It’s a standard test that evaluates non-native English speakers’ ability to speak and comprehend English at universities and colleges in English-speaking countries.

Most technical and professional organisations that speak English accept the exam. TOEFL is one of the world's two premier English language tests, alongside IELTS. It's a brand of ETS (Educational Testing Service), a private non-profit company that develops and administers exams.

ETS sends an official status report to organisations separately, which is valid for two years following the exam.

Eligibility Criteria for TOEFL

ETS does not specify eligibility criteria for taking the TOEFL test. You must, however, take it if universities in English-speaking nations require TOEFL scores as part of their admissions process.

In addition, TOEFL applicants must have a valid passport and bring an original copy to the exam. The passport must be valid at the time of registration and test.

TOEFL Examination Pattern

TOEFL is administered approximately 50 times per year. You can take the examination as many times as you want, but there must be a 12-day break between the previous and current tests. The test is divided into four parts, as explained below.

  • Reading

  • Writing

  • Listening

  • Speaking

Approximately ten days after the test, the applicant will receive an email indicating that his scores are eligible. The applicant can also view the results by logging into the TOEFL Registration website. Printed score reports are mailed out approximately 13 days after the exam.
