Describe something you taught to your friend/relative - IELTS cue card - sample answer 1

Introduction

Teaching is an effective way to share skills and knowledge with those who want to learn. Recently, I had the chance to teach something new to my friend. Today, I would like to talk about that experience.

Describe something you taught to your friendrelative

What did you teach them?

I taught my friend to make a tie-and-dye print on cloth. We picked up plain white fabric and all the bare essentials to do a tie-and-dye print on it. The process involved folding, twisting, and tying the fabric in various ways, then applying different coloured dyes to create unique patterns.

When was it?

A few years back when we were in the same college, we took home science as a subject and learned everything about it. For some reason, she did not attend class on the day the teacher taught us how to tie and dye.

How long was it for?

It is not a long process; it is simple and enjoyable. We completed the entire process in about one hour, including the time it took to tie the cloth, add the colours, and finally, the final product.

Explain how you felt about it

I was thrilled to have taught my friend something new. It was an excellent chance to connect and do something we both enjoy. It was satisfying to witness my friend's excitement as she picked up the fundamentals of tie and dye.

Conclusion

We loved the tie-and-dye process, whether tying the entire cloth in to get a different pattern or dipping it into other colours to get prints on the fabric.

Introduction

My family and I went out for dinner. We went to a cafe where we could sit and enjoy our meal. As we went in and sat to order food, I found that several games were placed for the visitors to enjoy while eating.

What did you teach them?

I explained the fundamentals of the " Jenga " block game, such as how the pieces move, how to assemble the board, and what the goal is. We reviewed the rules and played a Jenga game for about an hour. I also gave them some basic tactics and strategies to learn, such as guarding its pieces and maintaining control.

When was it?

Almost three weeks ago, my family and I went out to spend the evening together. Everyone is busy, and we hardly get time to sit and relax with our family.

How long was it for?

It went on for an hour, and we played two rounds of it; as soon as we began the third round, our food arrived, so we packed the game in its container and enjoyed our food.

Explain how you felt about it

Showing a new talent to my family made me feel good. Observing their development and enhanced gameplay as we engaged in additional games was satisfying. Making the rules and techniques simple enough for them to understand was another aspect of the teaching process that I enjoyed.

IELTS Speaking cue card - Follow-up questions

Question: Do you believe continuous learning is necessary for people to pursue their studies?

Answer: Yes, I believe that learning new skills can improve ongoing learning. People can consistently learn new things to enhance their critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

Question: Is visualisation a better way than telling during education?

Answer: Indeed, visualisation is the best way to convey ideas and grab attention. It substantially impacts the mind, which makes a person able to recognise things for a long time. For example, a child can learn a story more effectively through a movie or cartoons instead of just listening and vocalising in the classroom. Visualisation makes things much more straightforward and helps people understand things better. That is why media channels also use videos and pictures to analyse the news.

Question: What are some skills that younger generations can impart to older ones?

Answer: Younger people can teach older people many things, such as the basics of modern technology, which can be very difficult for older people to learn but is desperately needed. They can also help them gain access to computers, laptops, and cell phones so that older people can keep up with the times and not feel alone.

Answer: Some elderly persons experience increased anxieties because they worry more about their memory and capacity to learn. Their performance may suffer, and it may be more difficult for them to concentrate if they are anxious.
