Learning different languages has become a trend and a necessity. It is most useful for people who like to travel or who are keen to learn new things and invest in learning. There are numerous things to learn and grow in this world.

One such person I know is my uncle, my mother’s friend. His name is Dev; he lives in Paris, France. I had the opportunity to meet him when he visited India long ago. I was preparing myself that I wouldn’t be able to talk to him because of the language barrier, but to my surprise, that was not the case.

Dev uncle was born in Mauritius, which has a French-speaking population. After I had a conversation with him, I learned that he moved to Paris when he was very young and now has an established business there.

From the beginning, when I started talking to him, I was intrigued by how he learned the language with such proficiency. So, I asked him how he could speak Hindi so well. He then told me that even though he had been to India for the first time, his roots were Indian only, and he had been speaking Hindi his whole life.

The reason behind his good Hindi speaking was because he had been exposed to the language from the very beginning. This made him fluent in Hindi along with French. In addition to being exposed to the language, his line of work also helped him master the language.

To summarise, I learned that being adaptive to your surroundings can help you learn a lot many things and when you repeatedly do a task you have the capability to master it. It is said that practice makes a man perfect.

Nowadays, learning multiple languages is a necessity, as it helps you converse with different people and makes your life easier. Being bilingual has become necessary for people wanting to travel anywhere in the world.

Likewise, I met a traveller once. Her name was Brinda. She was of Indian origin but had never been exposed to the culture. She told me that she had to travel to various cities a lot due to her work requirements.

Brinda is originally from Malaysia but has lived in Mauritius her whole life. She works as a freelance agent for various thighs, which means she has clients from all over the world. This is also why she is adaptive to various languages.

When I talked to Brinda during our stay together, she told me that Hindi and Hindu culture have always intrigued her, which is why she made sure to get Indian clients as well. This led her to India as well. She learnt to speak fluent Hindi with the help of her clients and the internet.

The reason why she could speak such fluent Hindi was because she wanted to navigate the country better with her clients, and different languages intrigued her. She chose a way where she had no option but to learn the language for her benefit.

To conclude, the reason behind Brinda’s fluent Hindi-speaking was her resilience to learn the language as well as her need. She used different means to learn the language and mastered it to an extent where she could work freely.

The first question that comes to mind when considering language is whether knowing different languages has benefits. Should I indulge myself in learning different languages? But simultaneously, there are various benefits as well; I learned a few of those benefits of being bilingual from a colleague I had.

Mark is an American citizen. I met him during his visit as an exchange student at my school, where I was his host house. The most surprising thing about Mark was that even before he came on his exchange programme, he knew how to speak Hindi.

Mark is from New York and was born and bought in New York as well. He came as an exchange student when he was in high school, in his 11th standard. Very quickly, we became friends and have been ever since.

We started conversing, and I was talking to him in English, but then he started speaking Hindi, which surprised me. Looking at my happily shocked face, he told me that he had been working on his Hindi-speaking skills as soon as he got to know that he had been chosen to be an exchange student.

By the end of his exchange program, he could speak Hindi fluently. The reason behind this was that he wanted to learn the language and made efforts to do so, as he was also exposed to it. A combination of both things helped him become fluent in the language and adaptive to the culture.

In conclusion, learning any language takes effort and time. It is a skill that needs to be mastered. Mark became fluent in it because he willingly engaged in it. I learnt from him that there are certain things that can only be mastered through practice and time.

Question- What foreign languages do Indian students learn?

Answers- These days, Indian students are exposed to various languages through their school curriculum as well. The most famous languages in addition to English that students actively learn are German, French, Spanish, and Mandarin.

Question- Have you learned any foreign language apart from English?

Answer- Yes, I have learned French and have been interested in the language since school. I have also taken the French Proficiency Test and wish to pursue it further.

Question- Why are so many people learning English?

Answer- Over time, English has become a base language that is spoken in most countries. Knowing the language also opens various opportunities for candidates, such as studying abroad, working in multinational companies, etc.

Question- What are the different ways you can learn a foreign language?

Answer- Earlier studies were traditionally done from a book, but nowadays, students have different mediums like YouTube, different dialect drama, conversing with their fellow mates, and much more. Study techniques have changed drastically and for the better over the years.

Question- What are the benefits of the Internet for people’s learning?

Answer- In my opinion, the present provides greater learning opportunities. In the past, students relied on their professors to educate them. People are now capable of self-education. Furthermore, a large portion of the information on the internet is free, which significantly lowers the cost of learning a language.

“Describe a foreigner who speaks your native language (Hindi) very well” is a topic which forces us to think about a person’s interest and dedication to learning a language that he/ she has not been used to.
