IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

The international English language testing system(IELTS) was introduced in 1989 for people who need to demonstrate their English language proficiency for specific purposes. It continued to be used for helping universities and colleges assessing the English skills of applicants wishing to study or train in English language and is also used as a general test of English for immigration and employment in different countries.

There are two versions of this test, the Academic module, and the General Training module. The Candidates must choose to sit either Academic or General Training IELTS test.

Academic:

The academic IELTS test is for individuals who plan to study in English at University and is designed to test the understanding and use of complex academic language. University admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses is based on the results of the Academic test.

General:

The general IELTS test is suitable for individuals requiring a more general level of English proficiency for college, high school, employment or immigration purposes.

IELTS Sections:

The IELTS test is divided into four sections: Listening, reading, writing and speaking. All candidates should take the listening and speaking modules. There are different versions of reading and writing modules, depending on whether candidates are taking the Academic or General Training module of the test.

How is IELTS different from the TOEIC or TOEFL:

IELTS does not rely as heavily on multiple-choice Questions.
Different accents are used in IELTS including British, New Zealand, Australian and American.

Two different formats are offered (Academic and General Training), depending on the purposes of a test taker. IELTS is offered more regularly than TOEIC and TOEFL at most test centers.
